No fewer than thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
